Man
I saw Man in concert a number of times in the 70s and once in the 90s. What a truly great band! You always got your money's worth!
I first met Deke Leonard at the Johnson Hall in Yeovil. He was a cool and charismatic performer and his guitar cut through like a sabre, perfectly complementing Micky Jones's more lyrical playing. Deke and I had a great chat and it was great to meet him again years later in Bridgwater, where we had a long chat backstage. He had spotted my Jesus t-shirt from the stage and told me during our chat that he was a 'born again atheist', with a twinkle in his eye! That didn't stop him taking a copy of The Way of Salvation to read though! Micky Jones was probably the best improvisational guitarist ever and played with real soul. He was a great singer too! His son George is following in his footsteps and must be one the most gifted guitarists out there.
Man's line-up has changed many times over the years but my favourite was the classic four-piece line-up of late 1974/1975: DeKe Leonard, Micky Jones, Ken Whaley and Terry Williams. I first saw Man performing at the County Hotel Ballroom in Taunton when I was 14! Ken Whaley was a great bass player and inspired me as a teenage bassist! He and Terry Williams made a fabulous and rock-solid rhythm section. Man became my favourite band that night!
Enjoy the music!
